national committee and former governor of virginia. good to have you with us this morning. >> good to be back, thanks. >> one of the things i wanted to draw your attention was the cnn opinion research poll that says more people think that the country would be better off if congress was run by the republicans than the democrats. is there an enthusiasm gap out there? is there some question about whether or not democrats have the country on the right track? >> kiran, we definitely over the summer we're seeing that enthusiasm gap in a lot of polls. but we're seeing it dramatically close. so i think the cnn poll has a gap at about, you know, single digits, eight or nine points. we were seeing polls that showed it at 30 points over the summer. we're also seeing other polls where in the generic congressional ballot the republicans had a ten-point edge a month ago, and now it's essentially a dead heat among likely voters and very close among -- dead heat among registered and very close among likely voters. >> about 11 points, but go ahead. >> and we think we've got good momentum now. we're

there. and then there's the very red state of west virginia. democrats of course have a very, very popular governor running in joe manshun. will they put the money in that they need to win those races. one other thing republicans have to worry about, let's take a look at our map here where the democrats are targeting a few of these republican seats. there are five here that are sitting here. and of course three of them are still seats that democrats are trying to win. you've got missouri. they're spending real money there. they really think robin carnahan can beat, we'll see, not quite sure but it is a red state but it is a red state that robin carnahan very popular, raised a ton of money. kentucky, the first tea party victory was rand paul. democrats still believe that he is too weak to win that seat. we shall see. he's been leading in all the polls. jack conway has yet to be able to take a lead there. the third seat that's sort of sitting there ends up being florida. we're going to close there. take a look at this, what charlie crist said yesterday. he's now the independent, that

, former governor wilder of virginia. same thing. >> and bill clinton said essentially you got to stop saying this stuff is working. you know, this is a president with a really long list of legislative accomplishments. he clearly wants to get out and tout this stuff. the stimulus is entirely unpopular and not working. so carville, you know, the white house loves when they get suggestions from former clinton people on what to do, right? but i mean, carville says -- and i think he's got a point here, you've got to emphasize the fight and notes in low look in the rearview mirror here -- and not necessarily look in the rearview mirror here. >> and the president says the plan is working, focus, focus, focus. what about the message? >> they've got a message and it's not a placid time. the gulf oil spill probably set them back two to three months. that combined with their self-inflicted damage by dragging out the health care thing. there's also a sense of sort of like political a.d.d. at 1600. they lurch from topic to topic. there is no coherent strand. the thing you hear more than anything e

's a couple more seats, though, that could become competitive, connecticut and west virginia. they might not be considered so today but they could... if those seats become competitive as we get closer to the election then we know the tidal wave that people have talked about is really emerging and the republicans could take both houses. >> rose: vin weber former congressman now washington power figure. mark halperin, a national political power figure, senior political analyst for "time" magazine, coauthor of "game change" which at some point in our lives will be in paper back if not already. is it already, mark, or not? >> no, sir. late october i'll come visit you. >> rose: late october. we'll see you then. >> rose: we're in london with angela ahrendts. she's the c.e.o. of burberry. she's seen the transformation of the 154-year-old company into an international fashion powerhouse. she grew up in a small town in indiana. she sewed her own clothes and dreamed about a life in fashion. she has fulfilled that dream once associated with the classic trench coat burberry now sells everything from

, that is a republican's pledge to america. they rolled it out. they went to a hardware store out in sterling, virginia, what do you make of it? >> i think it is less interesting as a governing agenda as it is as kind of a rorschach test. mainstream moderate republicans and conservatives seem to bell come that. we are enthusiastic about telephone. precisely because it's not particularly bold, not particularly dangerous or controversial it really overturns the obama agenda. but tea party, the hard-core of the tea party was very critical of the pledge. for the same reasons. because it wasn't bold enough. they don't want to just overturn the obama agenda. they want to overturn broad layers of the u.s. government. i think that that presents a problem for republicans if they win the house between those that really want to take down the whole building and those that want to govern an effective wage. it's going to be a serious conflict. >> so we are getting a look at what could happen down the road. >> i think it is more of a political document than sort of a vague blueprint for governing. i mean they finesse
